Started on Wednesday May 28 with our OB/GYN appointment. I had horrible back pain while I was waiting for the appointment to start (two hours in any chair doesn't do well for me). Got in to see him and he didn't hesitate to check the progress. 1-2 cm and he figured baby wouldn't wait for the due date. Dr. Akinbyi told me to come to the hospital Thursday at 2:00 and he'd deliver my baby. No joking... well he might have been joking but I think he knew things were starting.
Went home and had on/off feelings of crampyness. Rested lots, laid on the birthing ball, had a bath. Nothing was really settling into a pattern. I took my Tylenol 3 and went to sleep.
3AM - Woke up with regular cramps. Woke up Jeremy every ten-fifteen minutes to check the time. They weren't strong, just regular.
5AM - Had another bath/Rescue Remedy. Still going... picking up in intensity but still about seven-fifteen minutes apart.
5:30AM - Woke up Jeremy, things are happening... time to call Sonya (doula) and grandma to come and get Tai.
6:00AM - Everyone is arrived, hanging out...
7:30AM - Decided to take the dogs for a walk to "get things moving". Pop/gush and water might have broke. Took dogs for a walk anyway.
8:30AM - Definitely time to go to the hospital!
9:00AM - Get to hospital, started to throw up and contractions happening every 2-3 minutes. 2-3 cm and the student doctor was considering sending me home until I was 4 cm. This didn't make me very happy. Also she tells me my water didn't break. And that my blood pressure was fine and always had been. GRRRRRR. Then comes back to tell me that Dr. Akinbyi has okayed admitting me.
10:00AM - IV started, throw me into the tub. Contractions ALL back labor and really painful.
12:00 - out of tub. Time to try something else. Only 5 cm. I felt pretty defeated around this time, like things were "never" going to end. At this point I had asked for an epidural, but Jeremy and Sonya kept distracting me with position changes and offers to walk. There was NO WAY I was walking though... just not happening! I couldn't stand when I did contract, the only thing I wanted to do was lean into Jeremy. I also felt really "pushy", but kept getting warnings from Sonya to resist the urge until things were "ready". We decided to try this egg shaped birthing ball, Jeremy in the back and me leaning back into him.
1:00 pm - Felt REALLY pushy. Nurse checked and it was indeed time to push! We got back into bed, I wasn't happy about the transition because it was extremely painful. Still all back labor but intensifying to a mind-numbing point.
1:25 pm - Ten contractions (or so) later, three pushes each contraction... there she was! Cord wrapped around only one time. The student doctor delivered along with the nurse, Dr. Akinbyi made it in time to put on his gown and hand Jeremy the scissors. Sonya ended up cutting the cord instead.
After this we endured the joy for the next eight hours or so. Jeremy went home to "sleep" (or enter a deep coma). I stayed up most of the night with a less than desirable roommate (but at least I only had one to share a room with and NOT three like I would have had). Went home the next afternoon.
My first meal home was pizza! So good to eat food again without the lingering nausea or reflux. We also picked up beer... I had a few sips. WONDERFUL.
